The Minneriya National Park Afternoon Safari is a private wildlife experience lasting approximately 4 hours, designed for visitors who want to explore the park during the afternoon. The safari is especially famous for its large gatherings of wild Asian elephants, particularly around the Minneriya Tank. The tour operator recommends the dry season from June to September as the best period to experience the famous elephant gathering.

The safari begins with hotel pickup at approximately 1:15 PM. You are transferred to Minneriya National Park and begin the game drive at around 2:00 PM. The safari continues until approximately 6:00 PM, followed by a return transfer and hotel drop-off around 6:30 PM.

During the afternoon game drive, you explore the park in a comfortable 4WD safari jeep. The park contains a mixture of forest, grassland and wetland habitats, with the Minneriya Tank providing an important source of water for wildlife. The operator highlights the opportunity to see elephants at relatively close range, while the exact sightings naturally depend on wildlife movements and park conditions.

The main attraction is the Minneriya Elephant Gathering, described by the operator as the world’s largest recurring gathering of Asian elephants. During the gathering, large numbers of elephants congregate around the reservoir, where they can be seen feeding on grass, drinking, bathing and interacting with one another. The gathering is particularly associated with the June–September dry season.
