The Minneriya National Park Morning Safari is a 4-hour private wildlife safari that offers an opportunity to explore one of Sri Lanka’s most important elephant habitats. The safari is particularly popular for seeing wild Asian elephants, along with deer, wild buffalo, monkeys, birds and other wildlife. The operator describes Minneriya as the location of the largest recurring gathering of Asian elephants in the world.

The experience begins early in the morning, with hotel pickup at approximately 5:15 AM. Because the morning safari is the more popular session, the operator recommends leaving early to help avoid traffic and reach the park in good time. The safari itself begins around 6:00 AM.

From 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM, you explore Minneriya National Park in a comfortable 4WD safari jeep. The early morning is a pleasant time for wildlife viewing, with cooler temperatures and opportunities to observe animals as they move through the park’s grasslands, forests and wetland areas.

The major attraction is the wild elephant population. Elephants may be seen wandering through the park, feeding, moving between habitats or gathering around water. The famous Minneriya Elephant Gathering is particularly associated with the dry months of June to September, when large numbers of elephants congregate around the reservoir.
