The Wilpattu National Park Full-Day Safari is an excellent choice for visitors who want to spend an entire day exploring one of Sri Lanka’s most famous wildlife parks. The safari gives you the opportunity to experience both the morning and afternoon wildlife drives, increasing your chances of seeing a variety of animals in their natural habitat.

The safari usually begins early in the morning with hotel pickup around 5:15 AM. You travel to the park and enter around 6:00 AM, when the morning safari begins. The early hours are particularly enjoyable because the weather is cooler and wildlife can be more active.

During the morning game drive, you explore Wilpattu’s forests, grasslands and famous villus (natural lakes). These water sources attract many animals, including Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, spotted deer, wild boar, wild buffalo and crocodiles. Birdwatchers can also look for peacocks, eagles, herons, egrets, storks and other species.

Around 12:00 PM, the morning safari ends and you have a break until approximately 2:00 PM. This is the ideal time to have lunch and relax because the middle of the day is generally hotter and many animals are less active. Lunch is generally not included in the basic safari package, but arrangements may be possible with the operator.

Wilpattu is particularly known for its Sri Lankan leopard, but sightings are never guaranteed. Other wildlife listed by the operator includes:

There are  Gulls, Terns, Owls, Kites and Eagles as well.  Also watchout for Sri Lanka’s endemic Jungle fowl, Little Cormorant and the Painted Stork.
