An afternoon safari at Wilpattu National Park is an excellent 4-hour wildlife experience, especially for visitors who prefer a later start. The park is famous for its Sri Lankan leopards, elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, crocodiles and rich birdlife.

Possible wildlife sightings include:

A major feature of Wilpattu is its villus—natural lakes and wetlands surrounded by dry-zone forest. These water bodies attract wildlife and provide excellent places to stop quietly and observe animals.

The late afternoon provides warmer, softer light for photography, and animals can become more active as temperatures fall. Current safari information recommends the later part of the afternoon, roughly 3:00–6:00 PM, as a particularly good period.

Overview

• Wilpattu park houses Leopards, Elephants, Bears, Deer, Crocodiles, Reptiles and many varieties of birds including the Garganey, Pin tail, Whistling Teal, Spoonbill, White Ibis, Large White Egret, Cattle Egret and Purple Heron. There are  Gulls, Terns, Owls, Kites and Eagles as well.  Also watchout for Sri Lanka’s endemic Jungle fowl, Little Cormorant and the Painted Stork.
