The Udawalawe National Park Afternoon Safari is a 4-hour private wildlife experience designed for visitors who prefer to explore the park later in the day. According to the safari operator, the afternoon safari starts at approximately 2:00 PM and continues until 6:00 PM, giving visitors the opportunity to explore Udawalawe’s grasslands, forests and wildlife areas during the cooler part of the day.

The experience begins with hotel pickup at around 1:15 PM. A safe driver collects you in a comfortable vehicle and takes you towards Udawalawe National Park. The operator specifically promotes the afternoon safari as an alternative for travelers who want to avoid the larger crowds that can occur during the morning safari.

At approximately 2:00 PM, you enter the national park in a comfortable 4WD safari jeep. The safari lasts about four hours, allowing plenty of time to explore different areas of the park and search for wildlife. The exact route can vary depending on wildlife movements, weather and conditions within the park.

Udawalawe is particularly famous for its wild Asian elephants, and elephant sightings are one of the major highlights of this safari. The park is also home to leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, spotted/axis deer, crocodiles, monitor lizards and other wildlife. Although these animals occur in the park, sightings of less common species such as leopards and sloth bears are not guaranteed.

The afternoon safari is also suitable for birdwatching. The operator notes that Udawalawe supports a large variety of bird species, including Sri Lankan spurfowl, malkohas, hornbills, junglefowl and other resident birds. The park’s wetlands and surrounding habitats provide good opportunities for bird photography during the drive.

• Species recorded in the Park include around 90 plus plants, over twenty fish, 12 Amphibians, 33 reptiles, 184 birds, 43 mammals including 130 butterflies.Udawalawe is also a bird watching site. Some of the breeding resident birds are Spurfowl, Malkoha, Hornbill Babbler, Jungle Fowl etc.Udawalawe Elephant transit home was established to look after abandoned elephant calves within the park.The Rusty spotted Cat, Fishing Cat, Leopard, Sloth bear, Sambar deer and Axis Deer are some of the animals found here.Reptiles and fish include lizards, crocodiles, monitors, snakes etc. Pine planting, poaching, cleaning of forests are a major threats to the park.
